Steve dashes down the corridor, shoes slapping against the ground, only stops long enough to read door numbers. 1936. 1937. If he can reach room 1940 before class starts it will be a miracle. Steve goes around the corner at a breakneck speed and barrels into another body. Physics, the simple laws of gravity, send Steve falling backward.

"Holy cow," the other guy says. "Are you okay?"

Steve wants to say no, wants to complain about how much his palms sting from meeting the concrete, how much the bones in his wrist hurt from taking the brunt of his fall, but he ends up sputtering lamely.

"I, uh, I'm—"

The guy points at him, smiling. "You're Steven Rogers."

Steve nods dumbly.

"I'm James, everyone calls me Bucky though." James—Bucky—says, holding out a hand to help Steve up. He takes it gratefully.

"We have Drawing and Design together." Bucky continues. "You should be more careful."

"Yeah," Steve replies after a beat of silence. "Thanks."

Bucky smirks. "See you ‘round." He gives Steve a wink and a salute. The look is vividly outlined in the sunset and when Steve makes it to his Life Illustrations class, three minutes late, he draws Bucky's expression like a man possessed.

Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love, but it sure does help.
